There are many shops and restaurants in Fowey (pronounced Foy) - here are some of our favourites after many years of research: Fowey Restaurants Sam's - this lively popular restaurant with an 'American diner meets Cornish sea food' feel is a great place to hang out (there used to be a waiting list to work here!). They don't take bookings, and at busy times you may be propping up the bar for a little while, but it's well worth the wait. The Other Place - slightly quirky location on the 1st floor above the take-away below, but a hidden gem specialising in seafood. Tiffins - deli by day, intimate bistro by night offering delicious food and great service. You won't find any 'Golden Arches' in Fowey (Sams do great burgers though)! See eatoutcornwall.com for more ideas and restaurant reviews. Fowey Pubs The Ship Inn - a traditional pub that serves great food. It's quite small inside and can be cramped in the summer months. The King of Prussia - an unusual name with many theories of its origin. Up the steps from the Town Quay, it's been modernised in recent years and also serves food. The Galleon - Fowey's largest pub, completely refurbished several years ago with a large conservatory and a terrace over-looking the river. The Lugger - a traditional pub, the food is surprisingly good, and great value. Fowey Shops The Romantic Englishwoman - if you like traditional quilted throws and wonderful bed linen, then this is the place for you. You may even bump into a couple of our more famous residents and their friends in this one. Reeds - have a great selection of gardening items and gifts. Sea salt and Fat Face are great for holidaywear. Pasties There are many shops selling traditional (& variations) pasties. The Cornish signature dish, originally thought to stem from the tin miners (when they contained meat & veg in one end and pudding in the other!) and as they say down here, these pasties are 'proper job' with real steak and vegetables, locally made and fresh. You'll find it tough not to eat them every day! Fowey Coffee Shops Pinky Murphys - a great refuge on the way to or from the town centre. An eccentric mix of furniture and some huge bean bags upstairs! Fowey Hotel Tea Gardens - an amazing location, watch the boats in the harbour whilst you indulge in a Cornish Cream Tea (we prefer jam first then the cream on top!). Brown Sugar - serving great coffee and delicious cakes, right in the centre of town. The Cone Zone - serve take away coffee and a wonderful selection of ice creams & great pasties (don't forget to ask for a loyalty card!). Other Shops Fowey has a butchers, bakers (and candle makers!), a small pharmacy, Post Office, newsagents, fishmongers (who do great wines too!), delicatessen and Tourist Information office. The local grocery store 'Top Shop' (imaginatively named as it's at the top of the town!) deliver to Fowey, and there are larger supermarkets (Tesco will deliver) nearby at St Austell. Mobile phone reception has improved in Fowey in recent years, all except Vodafone work now! |
